I have a serious question for all you pro players! How come it seems I have 4 cards 3 of them clubs and table have table have 5 cards 2 spades 3 clubs and it says I have two pair or is the online poker just fucking with me??
This 5 minute video could have been summarized with "It's Texas Hold'em except instead of two hole cards, you are dealt four and get to choose which pair you like at any point in time."
I've never played Omaha before -- hence why I'm here looking at an introduction -- but now that I've seen this I can understand both the appeal and disinterest in Omaha. Compared to Hold'em, at least.
The benefit is that since you're dealt four hole cards, you have an effective selection of 6 separate card combinations at any given time. This makes for a fat-stacked gambler's dream since each of the six available pairs gain or lose value depending on the draw on the street. This would likely make the game tolerable for players who lack patience and determination and don't like to fold frequently.
However it seems like a disaster for a competitive environment or professional scene. I may be wrong on this, but it's just my first impression. A large portion of Hold'em is reliant on your ability to read hands based on statistics, betting patterns, behavior during previous hands, etc. This of course is made possible through wonderful things like process of elimination, logical analysis, and psychological analysis. But it seems like all of that is out the window in Omaha. Because of the six possible combinations of hole cards, the hand someone is betting on the flop might not be the hand they're betting on the turn with. Sure, some things can be useful to make determinations here. Perhaps because of the various possibilities, maybe three of a kinds are significantly more common here. This would help others make bets relative to statistics but still, in comparison, this game looks like you're playing Russian Roulette with the gun up to your chips.
